Thursday December 15, 2011~ Holiday Hazards

Posted By Otter

This came from one of the local vet’s in the area. It is very informative.

Holiday Hazard How to keep your pet safe

Dangerous Foods The following can be toxic to pets: chocolate, raisins, grapes, macadamia nuts, garlic, onion, alcohol, caffeinated beverages, bread dough, and sugar-free candy and gum containing the artificial sweetener xylitol.

Regular Foods Despite tradition, bones should never be given to pets. Even beef, ham, and other “regular” foods that are not considered toxic can cause illness in pets. If your pet is a moocher, keep a saucer of his regular treats on the table to offer when he asks. He probably won’t know the difference!

New Treats and Toys Even a pet-safe treat can cause stomach upset if it is new to your pet. Offer only one of these at a time (ideally, separated by a few days). If your pet becomes ill after eating a holiday treat, it will be easier to trace the source and discontinue it. Also, check new toys for sharp edges, pieces that can be chewed off, or other potential hazards.

Plants Hazardous plants include mistletoe, some evergreens (including some types of pine), and holly bushes and berries. Try to keep these plants away from pets, or at least supervise pets when dangerous plants are nearby.

Decorations Tinsel, tree ornaments, ribbons, string, and garlands are some items that can be dangerous if eaten by pets. Keep these items away from pets — especially when pets are unattended. Don’t forget to cover any electrical cords or keep them out of reach.

Fire and Carbon Monoxide Monitor pets near fireplaces, wood-burning stoves, candles, and portable heaters. Also, don’t forget to check smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they are functioning properly. Space heaters, furnaces, and idling cars (in a garage) can increase the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning in pets and humans.

Christmas Trees Monitor your pets when they are around your holiday tree. Pets may eat the needles (even from artificial trees) or drink water from the base of the tree, which can be toxic (especially if there are preservatives in it). Keep electrical cords and decorative lights out of reach, too.

In many cases, if your pet has eaten or drunk something toxic, warning signs will include gastrointestinal problems, such as vomiting and diarrhea. Other signs may include tiredness and lack of appetite, especially in cats that have eaten lilies. If your pet shows any of these signs, or if you think he or she has eaten something dangerous but is not showing any signs yet, please call your vet right away. Treating your pet as soon as possible is essential!

Rosie1 Dakota1 Dakota2 Rosie2

Hi everyone, sorry for not posting, I’ve been as they say “under the weather”. Today, I feel a bit better so I had both Rosie and Dakota outside. Those two are smart, neither one wanted to be out in the cold. Rosie howled at me, then ran to the back door. Dakota stood in the middle of the play yard as if he was frozen. We all quickly came back inside to warm up and cuddle. I decided to have biscuit(carrots for Dakota) time early. I posted the photos which I hope you enjoy. Its been nice trying out the new camera.
Stay warm, I’ll post soon.

Brrrr… I expected to wake to snow this morning but to my surprise there was none, yeah. It is much colder, however.
Enzo, came for daycare today and it seems to always rain the days before he comes so no play yard. We did go out into the catch pen area but he wanted to come right back inside. He’s such a sweet, gentle guy. At lunchtime he just snacked away on his biscuit as you can see from the photo above.
We have some new clients coming this weekend. We looking forward to meeting all of them.
Until then, keep warm!

Good morning all. It’s a beautiful Saturday morning, the sun is out and shining but it is cold.
I had to clean out my car this morning because Monday it goes in for the repair of the rear end from the accident. I pray they won’t have it long. Driving Bob’s big truck, doesn’t thrill me.
The dogs are all fine Miss Molly was begging for me this morning. She wanted her treats after breakfast. I will try and snap a few pictures later today.
As the holidays approach us let’s not forget the common dangers we tend to forget. Dogs and cats have a way of getting into things for example… the trash which has turkey bones, the chocolates we lay out for guests, the tinsel, ornaments, lights from the tree, the beautiful Poinsettia Plant and so on. So keep these things in the back of your mind as you get through the season. Let’s keep ALL our animals safe.
I am off to get some laundry finished, enjoy the weekend.

BUddy1 gracie1 treat Treats 2

I hope everyone takes the time to read more about the current dog and cat food/treat recalls.
It’s been a busy few days. Getting myself ready for all the tests I had done Wednesday and Friday, then losing Friday after the tests completely to the sedatives, I am finally catching up.
I do have some photos I took the other day but they aren’t great, blame it on the medications.
The guys are getting their things ready for tomorrow’s opening day of the hunting season. The guns are ready, the ammo is packed, tree stands up, clothing is out, etc, etc…. I think they are ready. It’s going to be a very early morning tomorrow. I know the dogs will all remain inside if I hear shots close to the property. None of the dogs will be going out into the play yard tomorrow. No worries it is still soaking wet and has running water draining from the other day’s rain anyway.
I am going to see if I can upload the photos from here, wish me luck.
Have a great Sunday and happy hunting tomorrow!

Bob & I would like to wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving.
As you can see Bob has taken a liking to Darby & Buddy who overnight, become best buds. If one goes outside the other one follows. It is very charming to watch. Caymus, hates my camera. He sees me coming and he runs outside or vice versa. He is so strong, well muscled and like a tank. When he comes over to be petted, he leans against you, you can feel his strenght. He’s not kissy like the little dogs, he just jumps up at you. Fun is all I can say, Caymus is a fun dog.
Time to check the ham, I have to bast, bast, bast… Have a wonderful day whatever you do and be safe.

Happy Monday. It’s been a busy morning around there. The weather stinks. It was freezing first thing this morning, then the sun came out, then it rained. It looks like it could continue to rain at any second.
As many of you know Studdy and I made our pear applesauce yesterday which is why I didn’t post anything. Now all the canning stuff is away hopefully until next season. Yeahhhhhhhh.
With Thanksgiving just a few days away my posts may be limited, just so you know. I have lots of cooking/cleaning to get done in between caring for the dogs. Please bare with me. Know the dogs always come first.
On that know I’m off and running…..

As you can see Darby is having a blast at camp. She even loves Studdy. More tomorrow after canning if we aren’t too exhausted.

Afternoon, it’s another crisp day. The wind blows at times which makes it feel even colder. My camera is on the charger. I haven’t recharged the battery in a few days and I gather the video from this morning drained it. I will try to snap a few photos later if the battery is charged.
The girls Darby and Molly are enjoying each others company. They were outside running up and back together. Mr. Happy Tail as I now call him “Caymus” is also doing well. He had me up early barking at something. At 4ish in the morning, half asleep, I went out to find nothing.
Back to work and to get things ready for tomorrow. Studdy and I are making our famous pear-applesauce. This will be the last canning, thank goodness!
Have a great Saturday everyone. Grace and Camille Darby sends lots of kisses your way.
